Though Momo Patch primarily focuses on corgis, DM affects over 100 dog breeds, and our Shade Out DM series will reflect that diversity. As such, our next hard enamel pin in the #shadeoutdm series is in honor of this gorgeous girl Maggie. Maggie was a beautiful girl that recently completed her journey with DM and has joined the Rainbow Bridge. She was such a brave warrior while fighting this terrible disease. You will be sorely missed Maggie.
What breed was Maggie? Maggie was a Bernese Mountain Dog. BMD's have been around for a long time, and legend has it that the Romans brought the ancestors of the Bernese Mountain Dog to the Swiss mountains over 2,000 years ago. Eventually, BMD's got their name from the state of Berne, so you may see that sometimes they are also called Berners. Berners worked on farms, herding cattle, pulling milk and cheese carts, and serving as faithful companions and watchdogs...therefore, they are a part of the Working Group if you are into watching dog shows.
Berners came to America in the mid-1920s when a farmer in Kansas imported a pair to work on his farm. They are now a fairly popular breed ranking at number 23 on the AKC's most popular breed list.
Although Maggie is now free of her broken body, she still has an Instagram account should you like to give her a follow @maggiemaydm
Maggie is 1.75 inches long with silver plating with two grey rubber backings.
What is DM? DM stands for Degenerative Myelopathy, which would be the canine version of ALS/LouGehrig's Disease. It affects over 100 dog breeds and is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Many people are unaware of this non-curable disease, so we want to spread awareness, as it CAN be prevented by genetic testing prior to breeding & making well educated decisions.
